Happy Birthday Chase!

Today is Chase's 13th birthday. That makes him 91 in human years!

When I brought him home 13 years ago I didn't know what I was in for. I had never raised a puppy before. Let me tell you about my experience! Yorkies are known for issues with housebreaking so I had braced myself mentally and was armed with plenty of puppy pads.

Chase was housebroken within 2 weeks. I was working during those two weeks but he just is very smart and could understand what I was asking of him. He somehow knew how to communicate to me when he had to go out - he'd scratch at the door and look over at me. Housebreaking Chase was so very easy.

This one is a very special Yorkie and I'm so very thankful he's here to celebrate another milestone. You were all with me when he was in the hospital earlier this year. This milestone means so much to me and Greg.

I can't imagine life without this guy. He cheers me up when I come home from work, he makes me laugh with his never ending search for food. I treasure him. He's such a wonderful part of my life.

I love watching him sleep. When he dreams sometimes he sort of barks and moves his paws rapidly. I can only imagine what he is chasing in his dreams.

I also love hearing him drink water. I know. WEIRD. That's ok. I love him so much. In the absence of having human children, he is one of my kids.

Because it is so late(we went to the Mariner game tonight), I just quickly looked through some of my photos of him. I'd love to share them with you

Bad, Bad Blogger!

I've been absent for quite some time.


Why have I been absent??

First I was working too many hours! I usually work 36 hours a week and I was putting in 60.

Then my life was just so darn full and fulfilling.

Then I had blogger's block because I had finished projects but just hadn't gotten photos taken.

I finished the Angel Lace Shawl by Evelyn Clark about 2 weeks ago. Here she is:

Oh! I saw my *boyfriend* , Michael Buble' a couple weeks ago. I LOVE Michael Buble'.

Why is he my boyfriend? My friend Jamie terms him my boyfriend because...he just is! :)

He is a showman. It was so worth the $$. So worth it. I'd pay up the you know what to get into the first 10 rows. Damn he's good. Very satisfying!!

I love Michael Buble'. Friends, family members think I am in love with him because he's good looking. Well, that is a side benefit, but honestly I just love HIS VOICE. There is just something about it, the tone, the charm and charisma that comes through that just sets him apart from other artists for me. He conveys emotion, fun and vitality. Ok, enough about my *boyfriend*.

Here are my Monkey socks on the sock blockers. The yarn was dyed by Plucky Knitter. Sarah, Thank You. I love my yarn and it goes so well with the pattern!


I bought this colorway because I needed socks to match my Dansko's. Cute, huh?

Other project updates(other than the Nihon Vogue projects):

Memories of Ukraine. Remember this? I was working on it when I was in Bonaire. Amy calls this my Chase sweater. This is because I was madly knitting on this to cope with being thousands of miles away from my baby Chase when he was in the hospital. This was put on the very back burner when I started the Nihon Vogue course which began right when I got back from Bonaire. I picked it back up recently and the first sleeve is almost done. This will be done just in time for fall. Its a linen sweater...uh, wrong season. Oh well. It will be ready for next spring/summer! :) I was really down last week(because of work- I almost quit) so to treat myself I started the Autumn Rose Pullover by Eunny Jang. I know...like I don't have enough going. I had to cast-on for something of pure pleasure....(those that know me know I do this VERY often). Karen terms this startitis. We both had startitis...she cast-on for this recently as well.

One last thing...I have also done some spinning. This spinning was done during high stress and I just needed something to relax me. I didn't worry about it being even. I just wanted to spin so that is what I did. This is Dragonfibers - 50% wool and 50% bamboo. It really is pretty. I'm thinking of a knitting a simple scarf with it.

Birthday Post

Thank you all for your well wishes regarding my aunt. The memorial service was exactly as she would have wanted it.

Her view of life was this: "Enjoy what you have now, give back and be of good faith. Sorrow and pain must be endured. However, they are only temporary as are the emotions of joy and happiness. Life is best remembered for the joy of the lesson learned".

I almost didn't attend the service because of work pressure. Then I came to my senses. Hello?? Family comes first and I'm so glad I went. Not only to honor her but it is nice to see cousins that live across the country. I have a wonderful family.

My life has been overwhelming. From work pressures, to Nihon class homework and self imposed pressures in other areas of life.

I worked through my Birthday, today. But...I did take a couple of breaks.

One was to have my first mammogram. I was a bit worried and scared. I had heard the horror stories of having breasts squashed to pancakes. My experience was a good one. Yes, it hurt but like Auntie Lillian said, it was only temporary pain.

What made my experience so pleasant was going into Village Yarn and Tea and seeing my friends. Seeing familiar, loving and kind friends before the procedure really kept the fear at bay. I had the mammogram in a traveling Breast Express. The women were kind and wished me a happy birthday. Then I went back into the shop with my card that said I would receive a free gift for having done my mammogram. Get a look at this swag!

The other break I took was to have a quick dinner with some of my sisters, nieces&nephews. On the way out I found I had mail! What was in my mailbox??

My latest Blue Moon Rockin' Sock Club installment! I haven't been too crazy about this year's socks - the patterns I feel don't highlight the yarn as well as they could. This installment...I am really, really happy with.

To do some catch up - almost two weeks ago I took a week off to spend time at Bangrila, our lake house, with my siblings and their children. It was fun but quite honestly, work was on my mind...always in the background...providing mental white noise.

Here is a picture of my brother-in-law tubing on the lake with Bangrila in the background. Bangrila (what we call the lake place - rhymes with Shangrila) is a haven to get away from it all. It is on Spencer Lake near Shelton Washington.

While we were at Bangrila, there was this blue heron that kept visiting us. He was quite tame and friendly. Greg and I went out in a foot paddle boat to get close to him and he let us get quite close.

This morning we had a visitor near/on our back door. I thought of Ryan and her kindness to bugs. I'm not sure why I thought of you Ryan...but...I did. I was going to write to you that you HAD to post today even if you noted you weren't going to. You have to..its MY birthday. Oh well. I guess the world does not revolve around me! :)

Next post I promise to update you on my knitting/spinning projects. I have many things going and I have been making progress!

It wasn't the best as birthdays go because I had to work. Today is usually a flex day but I've had to work through many flex days recently. I will also have to cancel my monthly knitting gathering tomorrow as I'll be working through the weekend.

As Auntie said, its only temporary and I'll find joy in the lesson learned.

Goodbye Auntie Lillian

My Auntie Lillian passed away this past Monday.

She was my mother's oldest sister. I find it hard to write about her.

She died of a brain aneurysm. They were able to operate on her but she was just not strong enough to recover.

It brings back so many memories for me, as my mother also suffered from a brain aneurysm.

A couple of my sisters visited my aunt at Harborview a couple of weeks ago. The said she looked so much like my mother when she had her brain aneurysm and that it was very hard to see her. I could not find the strength to go see her before she died.

I am sure she was welcomed warmly into heaven by her husband, Uncle Jack, her siblings Art and my mother Marie as well as her parents, Takeko and Shigetoshi.

Take care Auntie Lillian. You will be greatly missed.

New Toy

Reporting from home. Nice thing about the work I do - I can do it virtually if required. I'm working from home today(have to babysit my husband for the first 24 hours after his surgery - read on) and I'm on my lunch hour. So I can do a quick post.

Oh I'd never drop spindle". You'd think by now I would know better than to make statements such as this(TMK - are you reading this?).

One of my classmates in the Nihon Vogue certification, Candace, was drop spindling during breaks at class. What she was spinning was so beautiful. I crave spinning sometimes and it isn't the most portable activity(with a wheel, that is).

To backtrack and give you some history - Candace actually helped me buy my very first roving at Madrona in January. We were both in the Tailored Knitting class and I saw her fondling fiber in the marketplace. It was her kindness that actually, really and truly, got me over my fear of buying roving(girl you opened the flood gates). She probably isn't aware of this. I didn't have an *actual* fear of roving but it was more of fear of what to do with the fiber and could I actually spin?

I'm in love(I fall in love easily) with my Greensleeves Lady Barbara(.75 0z).

While Greg was having knee surgery yesterday I popped on over to Weaving Works and bought this little gem. I immediately ran home to get some roving. I decided to start with some Crown Mountain Farms Corriedale Pencil Roving in Azure Sky(thanks to LindaK - thank you for selling this to me!). Then I looked in my Teach Yourself Visually Handspinning by Judith Mackenzie McCuin and within minutes was on my way.

I took my handy dandy spindle and roving, some knitting and headed back to the waiting room! I had yet another hour wait before my happy, high, hubby was ready to go home. He's always so funny after these kinds of things because he is drugged up. He's a happy guy!

I had to drop by Target to get his drugs on the way home. I come out to the car after getting the prescription filled and I hear someone has their stereo on full blast. It is Greg jamming out, high as a kite.

Today he's back to a good normal. He's limping around but he is not the type to be down for long. The doctor's office called today to get progress report. I told them he's getting up and down the stairs fine. She said he needs to be restful the next couple days. He's going from his office to the kitchen like he hasn't just had knee surgery. I told him he needs to rest. He replies "I need some exercise - because I've been sitting for two days". Oh geez. He doesn't know how to rest, that one.

I'm enjoying the portablility of this little spindle. What a great thing. I actually spun up a lot for just a few minutes here and there. Pretty cool, huh?

Not bad spinning either in my very limited spinning experience.

I have to admit something a bit strange. I had sleeping dreams about drop spindling. In my dreams I could *feel* what it would feel like, feeling the spindle in my hands, drawing out the roving, winding the fiber around the shaft. When I started doing it, it felt like I had done it before.

Catch Up!

What did I do today? I was playing catch up!

I had to work 6 days this week(I usually work 4). Work is stressful and incredibly busy for me right now so that doesn't leave a lot of time to do my Nihon homework, or any fun knitting.

The funny thing about time is when I don't have much to spare I find a way to be more efficient!


Today I re-wrote all my class notes from our last Nihon session. I like color coding my notes so I can understand the explanations better. Here is some evidence:

I have been knitting on the raglan. I am at the waist shaping. I went down .25 mm in needle size to do some subtle shaping. You can't really tell from this photo but...it is going in a tiny bit. Now the thing with doing the waist shaping is that you begin and end the shaping 5-6cm above and below your exaxt waist.

I know it looks a lot like it did before I completely tore it out and started over. Believe me, I did start over and when I try it on...I can tell the difference. Amazing both "versions" were done on a US 6. One was 4.25 mm(new and improved) and the other on a 4.00mm(the one that no longer exists).


Now for non-homework related news. Here are my monkey socks. I just LOVE this pattern! I have it memorized and it seems to go rather quickly. I love my Plucky Knitter yarn too. Sarah is a dear. She is benefitting from my high stress level and retail therapy. Her stuff is worth it though and she's sweet to boot! See her blog and her shop!


The monkey's are a bit catty wampus on my foot but I'm in a hurry - gotta be as efficient as possible and this may be a blog record for me - getting it written, pics loaded and published!

July Monthly Knitting

I host a monthly knitting/spinning/craft get together at my house. I haven't done an entry on one of these in quite some time.

My fiber buds are usually my guinea pigs on recipes, too. I cooked a vegetarian green chile enchilada dish on behalf of Gail's(vegetarian) birthday. It was very, very yummy, if I may say so myself. In fact Karen has since tried the recipe as well but with chicken and it was a hit with her family. You can find the recipe here.

Here is Melinda with her what I call "Ruth's Kauni Cardigan". Beanie had to get in on the action as well. They look good together don't they? Melinda - you should knit Beanie a cute little "Ruth's Kauni dog sweater". Just kidding.

Speaking of Ruth. Remember she is not only the person that designed this wonderful cardigan but she sent me the yarn for this? See my February 2007 archives. As you all know out in blog land, once Stephanie, the Yarn Harlot, got ahold of this design, everyone wanted to knit this. Now there is a Kauni KAL(which is now closed).

Well I have become friends with Ruth in the past 6 months. I invited her to come to the Nordic Knitting Conference in October but since this was the first year of this conference I advised her to wait and come for Madrona in 2008(Feb 14-17). She postponed her trip in favor of coming for Madrona.

So she is planning on coming to Seattle in February. Yes, she is going to be staying with me and attending Madrona. We have to iron out all the details but I'm so thrilled to have her come.

I have a lot of blogging to catch up on! I was tagged as a Rockin' Girl Blogger and I haven't had time to post that!

I've also been working a lot and very stressed. Stress means retail therapy. I want to post photos on all the lovely yarn I have purchased from Plucky Knitter and The Yarnsnob. I hope to relieve my workload or else I'll be broke!

I have not had time to put as much time into my Nihon Vogue homework or do much knitting! One of my classmates did a nice article on our Nihon class. If you want to learn more, see this article.

Stitch 'N Pitch

Last night Michale and I attended Stitch 'N Pitch at the Seattle Mariners against the Oakland Athletics. We lost unfortunately.

Despite losing, we had a great time!

It was a beautiful day. I love seeing fiber-y stuff and people with a passion for anything fiber-y posed against the Seattle skyline.

What really cracked me up is when the Mariner players came up to bat when they display a photo of the player along with their number up on the big screen, they had a knitted background and the player's number was put on a ball of yarn. See Ichiro's here:

As you can see only the Mariner players got that special treatment. Here is Mark Kotsay(doesn't look so happy, does he? Maybe he's disappointed he didn't get to be up on the screen with knitting stuff!) up on the marquee.

This is what I was working on last night. Monkey socks with Plucky Knitter merino. Sarah's dying is yummy and the merino is so, so, so soft! You should go check out her etsy shop.

I'm such a fan of Amy's stitch markers. A conservative way to put it is I have a *large variety* of her markers. You can never have too many stitch markers can you? Especially if you have a lot of projects going concurrently!!!

She made these special ones just for the event for Village Yarn and Tea.

On a side note: I signed up for my first mammogram at their booth. Annually they host a Women's Health Fair. If you need a mammo and are dragging your feet....call the shop to schedule an appointment. The Swedish Breast Care Express will be there on Friday August 24 and Saturday August 25th. You can make the whole experience an enjoyable one(as enjoyable as getting your boobs smashed can be). Village gives out a goody bag(isn't that right ladies??? Correct me if that is not correct) so that is added incentive to take good care of yourself! After all, knowledge is power. If you have anything suspicious, it is better to catch it sooner rather than later! Swedish takes most health insurance plans. Be sure to check with your insurance provider on your coverage.

I scheduled mine for my birthday. I like getting these kinds of things taken care on/near my birthday. I'm grateful to celebrate another year on the earth and by doing all the preventive things I'm supposed to, it will give me better odds that I'll be here to celebrate another birthday next year! ;)

I'm getting off track - but if you haven't scheduled your annual pap either...please do that as well. The phone call may take 10 minutes at most and you can feel good about taking care of you - put yourself first!

Oh - another side note - I never posted after my skin cancer scare. My facial blemish thingy was normal! Whew!

Two other things I bought. I got the Stole 'N Bases (what a cute play on words) pattern by my friend Ellen. They have the patterns for sale at Village Yarn and Tea. Go to the link on her name, she just posted on the stole. The pattern is based on diamonds (like baseball diamonds).

Baseball fans, you have to have this pattern!

I could not leave my passion for spinning out in the cold. I bought some baby alpaca roving in a charcoal gray. I've never spun this fiber and it was so deliciously soft I couldn't pass it up.

I gotta run. I have LOTS of homework to do for my Nihon class. As you know from my previous post I basically completely frogged the raglan back. I need to get caught up! Wish me luck!

AH HA moment or is it UH OH??

The second session of the Nihon Vogue certification program was rigorous. After the first day, I came home exhausted. I had intended to review my notes and do some pattern drawing. I came home and could only manage to have dinner and start reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

The first day we worked hard on drafting the pattern for project 3 - a crewneck sweater with set-in sleeves. The pattern drafting is a done using very exacting techniques. Making sure the sleeve cap will fit into the armhole is comprised of many steps. Most of us had to do adjustments to the body at the bustline(moving the bustline up) to accommodate the correct measurements of the sleeve cap.

In addition, another thing I learned is that the decreases for the front and back are not done at the same rate. So if you calculate decreases for the front, they are different for the back - you cannot just calculate the rate for the back and use it for the front which is how most patterns are written. The number of decreases for the front and the back must be the same overall because your shoulder seams must match.

You can imagine there are quite a few calculations to make all the pieces fit together! There is A LOT of math involved in this. It is all very intriguing to me. I love it! It is so very interesting and logical. I'm a Virgo so this goes along with my personality - analytical.

I am astounded at the talent possessed by the students in this class. I feel a bit out of my league but there is so much to learn from those with skills that exceed ones own. It is really energizing to be a part of this course.

Here is a bird's eye view of our classroom.

The environment is relaxing and supportive. Suzanne feeds us so well. We have breakfast and lunch provided as part of our course fees. The food is very delicious and healthy! It is a wonderful way to spend a weekend.

The title to this post is about an Ah Ha moment I had. I've been knitting along on my raglan, top down, sweater. Before our class on Saturday I put the sweater on waste yarn and tried it on to make sure it fit. It was a bit tight but I figured it was because this is before the first wash and the yarn will relax after its first washing.

During the weekend Jean talked about garment shaping done purely with the increasing or decreasing of needle size rather than increasing or decreasing the number of stitches.

For every .25 mm that you change needle size, this will change your garment size by 4%. So for instance, say you are knitting on 4mm needles and your garment is 50cm(20 inches) and you change(increase) your needle size to 4.25, your garment will increase 2cm(.8 inch).

So you can do shaping purely by changing your needle size. You may want to use this technique if you are trying to keep a full pattern repeat but you want to do some shaping.

We also, in class, discussed that in Japan they have needles in sizes that are in-between the ones we use in the United States. For instance in the US we do not have 4.2mm or 4.8mm needles.

I began thinking about how my raglan sweater felt tighter than I expected based on my exacting calculations. So in my notes, I had jotted down that I had used a 4.25 for my guage swatch. I used this same needle to cast-on for the project. Then eventually I needed to switch to another set of needles because there were more stitches on the needle than was comfortable for the length of circular needle so I switched needles. I happily knit away. I realize that there may be a bit of difference between addi's as compared to bamboo but I *figured* it was negligible. Plus I didn't have the length in bamboo that I needed and I needed to continue knitting.

Today I realized (Ah Ha) that maybe the needles I used for the guage/beginning of the sweater was different than what I used later on in the sweater. What I did the guage and began the sweater on were 4.25mm and the ones I'm now using are 4.00. This was the UH OH moment.

Even though both are marked US6, they indeed are different and will make a 4% difference in my garment! This explains why the sweater felt a bit tighter than I expected.

I'm learning so much in this class. I'll definitely be more attentive to needle size, not the US measurement but the mm measurement. As a result of this class, I'm a convert to the metric system. The calculations are easier to do and the needle sizes are more exacting. A US 6 is not a US 6 for all manufacturerers because one might be 4.0 and one might be 4.25.

You know how you *know* this but don't really know it?

The exacting standards of this course are helping me *get* it. Maybe this small detail will help you learn from my mistake, I mean lesson.

Ready for class

I finished all my homework for the next Jean Wong/Nihon Vogue certification class.

I completed my swatch for Project 3, or P3 as I term it, Wednesday night and it is now dried and ready to go. The swatch did relax after it took its first bath. The stitch and row guage before washing were 18 stitches and 27 rows per 10 cm. After washing and drying they are 16 stitches and 27 rows.

The blue bracelet is from Heaven Help Us on Etsy. The medal attached to the bracelet is of St. Blaise. Now if you grew up Catholic, you'd understand. Catholics have saints for everything. This particular saint, according to Sister Mary Martha(you've gotta read her blog - such a crackup!) is the Patron Saind of Cold and Flu Season, Throat Problems and Wool. I had to buy it once I read that St. Blaise is "also the patron of wool gatherers, sheep farmers and shearers and wool weavers". Sounds applicable to me!

Go to her Etsy store. You'll find saints for just about anything. Maybe you need a patron saint of Great Breasts or how about the saint for People who get dissed. Maybe you need St. Isidore, if you are a Computer Geek.

Here is the raglan sweater for class. I put it on waste yarn(the purple stuff) to try it on to make sure it fits. It is a teeny weeny tad bit tight but this yarn also relaxed after washing the swatch so it should be okay. The green yarn is what Jean provided to us for a provisional cast on. It is very slick. She gets it in Japan.

And the front details. If you look closely you'll see that the back is just a bit longer(3cm to be exact) than the front. The raglan is designed this way. I'm sure I'll get more details on why this is tomorrow in class.

Have you ever lost a project in your house?

Last Friday Greg and I had about 30 people over to celebrate Greg's retirement. I had my 100% linen summer sweater project, Memories of Ukraine, on the couch in the living room. I saw it there, picked it up and put it away before guests arrived. Where did I put it? I cannot find it. It is NOWHERE to be found. I have looked in all the usual hide-it-away places and I cannot find it. I'm so frustrated!! I must have more hidey places than I thought. Isn't that weird???

Since I cannot find that f*&# project, I picked the Angel Lace Shawl back up again. I have two more pattern repeats and the border to do. I'm getting there!

Do you want to know yet another bone headed thing I did recently? First let me give you some background. I've been working very hard at work(and longer hours some days). Lots of stress and pressure. Any of those of you that know me well, know how serious, super responsible I am at work!

So a couple friends of mine, Greg and I were going to see the 4pm showing today(Friday) of the new Harry Potter film at the IMAX at the Pacific Science Center at the Seattle Center. I bought tickets earlier in the week on-line. About an hour before we were set to leave the house to pick up Jamie, I look at the receipt I printed out. The tickets were for yesterday. YESTERDAY! The 4pm show today is sold out so we had to bag the whole outing. All the shows for the weekend are sold out. Dorkiness #1.

Then you should have heard me on the phone to the Pacific Science Center. I call the number printed on the recept and it is a message, not a live person. I leave a message. Shortly after hanging up I realize I left all the important information EXCEPT my phone number. Dorkiness #2.

So I call them back. In my haste, waste, or whatever, I mis-dial. I start into my story and the lady on the other side says "I think you have the WRONG number". Dorkiness #3.

Meanwhile, Greg is laughing his butt off at me. Shit. Give me a break. So to do something relaxing tonight - we'll just go out to dinner. I'm hoping they will let us re-book our tickets for another showing. Who is the Patron Saint of Dorkiness?? I need to find a saint to help me with my lack of brain power.

My next post will have some photos from the Nihon Vogue class. I'm excited! We start bright and early tomorrow morning. Part of me is dying to get my hands on the 7th Harry Potter book tonight at midnight. But then I know I'd be up reading it when I need to be sleeping. Admittedly, I'm going to get it early in the morning before I go to class!

This kind of *passion* for life gets me in trouble. Too much life and not enough rest!

I guess that is not such a bad thing.

BBQ with Cuzzin Tom!

I attended a BBQ today hosted by TMK and Ryan to celebrate the visit of Ryan's Cuzzin Tom.

Everything about the day was perfect. The weather, the food, the company, all perfect.

Tom even had gifts to hand out but...there was a pop quiz. I think I was probably one of the only attendees that did not come home with a prize!!

Then Tom received gifts. I love his response to getting coffee - it is to "help in my awakening". What a line from a buddhist monk!
